What is a nursing necklace, and how will it help me? The purpose of a nursing necklace is to give the nursing baby something to focus on.  Keeping baby busy and occupied means longer breastfeeding times. Mom wears the necklace while baby is nursing, or Dad or another caregiver wear it while bottlefeeding. Younger babies sharpen their visual skills by focusing on the color and shapes of beads. Older babies reach for the beads, fell them, spin them, and are delighted by the texures and colors.  Babies really do breastfeed longer with something so much fun to focus on.  This also takes the focus off of pinching or twiddling with Mom!  When other caregivers wear the necklace, it establishes a sense of familarity to baby, and makes bottlefeeding more fun for baby and caregiver.

What age is best for a nursing necklace? From newborn babies to preschoolers, nursing necklaces are fun, entertaining, and educational. My first experience with a nursing neckalce was when my son was 5 months old, and beginning to sit up and look around on his own. In his mind, breastfeeding tood him away from his "explorations" too long. The nursing necklace made a big difference! He played with it delightedly while nursing, nursed longer each session, and nursed for 7 months after first using the necklace! Now, as a 2 year old, my son has several different necklaces, and still likes to play with them. I created the "Rainbow ABC" necklace just for toddlers learning their letters and colors.  Though he no longer nurses, he knows the necklaces are special, because we use them for "quiet" time with Mommy, snuggling or reading together. He has a different necklace that he wears with Dad (sports), and has even dubbed one as "Grammy's" necklace! Each necklace is 28-31" long, with a magnetic 'breakaway' SAFETY CLASP. The necklaces are strung on waxed linen, knotted every few inches for added strenght. The SAFETY CLASP is very important, not only for your comfort, but baby's safety, too. If baby pulls hard when you're wearing it, the magnetic clasp will break away, and can be snapped right back together. Because many children wear and play with these into toddlerhood, a SAFETY CLASP can avert a disaster if you child should get caught on something while wearing it! Please remember that all beads are a choking hazard, and your child should not play with them unattended!
